Teaser trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore WB’s unexpected release has provided us with our first, and many, glances of the new flick. So, here’s how it works:
We start with a stunning image of Hogwarts that leads us through a window and down a hallway where Jacob, Lally Hicks (who you may know from CoG’s Phoenix Book), Newt, and Theseus are strolling.
Next, we see Dumbledore, Albus standing next to a big ornamented cylinder in the Room of Requirement. We can make out the words’magesterial chamber of ancient wizardry’ on the cylinder if we look closely (if you turn the image upside-down you can make out the end). The cylinder itself looks like a Bhutanese prayer wheel, which is where we’re going in this movie — Bhutan. There’s also a single ‘beast’ carved in several stances, which we’ll return to later.
Inside the Room of Requirement, we see Newt, Theseus, Lally, and Bunty standing around 4 apparently similar cases until Newt grabs his and passes through the cylinder, which we now know is a portkey.
Albus and Jacob are still AWOL, so we can only presume they’ve already entered Bhutan using the portkey.
Next, we go to Bhutan, where a variety of events take place in this little footage. To begin with, they are most likely the temple steps mentioned by Oliver Masucci, who portrays the Head of the ICW. Then three different colored fireworks go out, including yellow, red, and Grindelwald’s green, which explodes into his insignia. The big rotating posters on each side of the stairwell also feature Grindelwald.
There are also four individuals standing at the foot of the steps, obviously gazing forward at the camera, thus maybe protecting it? If you look carefully, both of their hands seem to be glowing, indicating that they may be guarding with more than just wands. Then there are two individuals halfway up, one of them is Newt, and a huge group at the very top looking down. Many of the folks at the top are dressed in red, which we’ll learn later is most likely Tao’s color.
For those who don’t follow me on Twitter, Tao is a character that appears in the Phoenix Book and is an ally of Dumbledore, who we know has’supporters’ thanks to an extra’s part, thus he may be one of the candidates for Massuci’s present position as Head of the International Confederation of Wizards. (Note: a lot of this is speculation based on what we’ve learned thus far; this hasn’t been formally stated.)
In the following shot, we see a smiling Grindelwald being carried in the middle of the frame by his happy followers in green. Returning to the colors, to the left, you’ll see a rival party waving a yellow flag with a woman’s portrait – this is most likely Maria Fernanda Cândido, who is widely rumored to be portraying Santos, the Brazilian Minister of Magic. To the right of the picture, there’s a split when the clothes become red, indicating that these are Tao’s fans. Looking closer at the picture, we can see that the two snow-capped pillars that serve as separators for the three groups resemble the route from the set photographs we’ve previously seen. Is this the entrance of the ICW, where the three candidates will assemble for a vote? Perhaps they’re on their way to the Ministry dinner party, which we’ll see later in the episode?
The following picture shows Vinda Rosier casting a spell into the darkness, which is a nice change of pace. There’s not much more to notice here save for the scenery – is this, possibly, China, based on the set photographs’ terrain?
If it is China, she might be linked to the following scene, which shows Newt racing through a bamboo jungle while under assault. But it’s not just Newt; on the second slide, you’ll see that he’s holding a young beast that resembles the portkey carvings we saw before. Now, this is a little spoiler, but we’ve known for a long time that Grindelwald’s acolytes are sent to China in the film’s opening scenes to fetch a tiny monster. Is this the aforementioned baby beast?
We’re back at Hogwarts, where we observe a Gryffindor seeker (dressed in number 7 Quidditch gear) following another Quidditch player across the Great Lake.
Returning to the action, a stinger of what may be a Manticore can be seen firing flames in a vast cavern.
The following scene shows its intended victim – Theseus, who successfully avoids the onslaught.
Another rapid flip to what looks to be the Ministry’s dinner party scenario, which we also know about through an extras’ role, but this time Jacob is there and appears to be under siege. If you look carefully, you’ll see that he’s also wielding a wand! Is he being assaulted because he grabbed it from somewhere? Or is it a ruse to allow him, a Muggle, to join the wizarding party? Hopefully, the next trailer will provide more information!
Returning to Bhutan, we find Dumbledore receiving a golden snitch. I believe this is comparable to the scenario in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, in which the snitch Dumbledore gave Harry held not only something, but also a hidden message that could only be read by the correct person. Maybe we’re witnessing how Dumbledore got to be so confident in his tactics in Harry Potter? Is this snitch connected to the seeker we saw before?
Following that, we get a peek of what seems to be an epic struggle between Credence and Albus. In this scene, we see a furious Credence sprinting with his Obscurus across a snowy Berlin towards Albus, who is preparing for the assault.
The scene seems to have been inverted, which is odd, but it might be for continuity with the prior viewpoint in this teaser.
Then, in a breathtakingly strong one-second demonstration, Albus redirects Credence’s Obscurus strike with only his hands — wandless magic.
Is it just me, or is there a faint imprint of a phoenix in Albus’ spell in the first image?
Finally, we see the scene where the voiceover is coming from: Albus chatting to Theseus in what seems to be the Hogs Head pub, with Newt in the backdrop (presumably, this means we’ll see Aberforth in the entire teaser Monday).
The narration:
“Our world as we know it is collapsing.” Things that seem impossible now will seem to be unavoidable tomorrow. You’ll have to believe me if you agree to do what I ask, even if your gut warns you not to.”
